First Lady, Ida Saxton McKinley's
restored Victorian home |
While visiting Cuyahoga Valley, I found that the
First Ladies National Historic Site was close by in downtown Canton, OH. So, I went on the tour, starting at the Education and Research Center in a restored 1890's bank building which showcased and honored the first ladies throughout history. Unfortunately, photography was not allowed. But, I found their current focus on first ladies' role as ambassador very interesting, especially since first ladies have no such official capacity.
The second part of the tour was held at Ida Saxton McKinley's restored Victorian home. A costumed docent gave the tour, sharing how Ida Saxton lived her life as first lady, as well as her self-confinement to this house as she mourned her husband's death for the rest of her life.
